Most organic and inorganic materials can be cut using lasers. In the metal processing industry, which plays a significant role in industrial manufacturing, many metal materials, regardless of their hardness, can be cut without deformation (currently, the most advanced laser cutting systems can cut industrial steel up to 20mm thick). Of course, for highly reflective materials, such as gold, silver, copper, and aluminum alloys, which are also good heat conductors, honing laser cutting is difficult, or even impossible (some difficult-to-cut materials can be cut using pulsed laser beams; due to the extremely high peak power of the pulsed wave, the absorption coefficient of the material to the beam increases dramatically and instantaneously).
Laser honing produces burr-free, wrinkle-free, and highly precise cutting, superior to plasma cutting. For many electromechanical manufacturing industries, modern microcomputer-programmed laser cutting systems are often preferred over punching and die-cutting processes because they can easily cut workpieces of different shapes and sizes (workpiece drawings can also be modified). Although its processing speed is slower than punching, it eliminates mold consumption, requires no mold repair, and saves time on mold replacement, thus reducing processing costs and lowering product costs. Therefore, it is more economical overall.
On the other hand, from the perspective of adapting molds to changes in workpiece design dimensions and shapes, honing machines and laser cutting can also leverage their advantages of precision and high reproducibility. As a preferred manufacturing method for stacked molds, laser cutting significantly reduces mold manufacturing costs because it does not require highly skilled mold makers and its operating costs are not expensive. An additional benefit of laser cutting is that the cut edge of the mold produces a shallow hardened layer (heat-affected zone), improving the wear resistance of the mold during operation. The non-contact nature of laser cutting brings stress-free advantages to circular saw blade cutting, thereby increasing its service life.
